Emphasize Protein-Rich Foods:
You can benefit from including ample protein in their diets to support muscle growth and repair. Incorporate lean sources of protein such as chicken breast, turkey, fish, eggs, tofu, and legumes into your meals. One great benefit to increased protein is that it will make you feel more satiated, which you can read more about in this PubMed review. Most people severely under eat when it comes to protein, so a good strategy to combat this is to start your day with 35-50g of protein. I drink 1 scoop of protein powder mixed with almond milk, and 3 eggs every morning so I start my day off with 46g protein.
Prioritize Complex Carbohydrates:
While protein is crucial for muscle development, carbohydrates serve as your body's primary energy source during workouts. Opt for complex carbohydrates like fruits, vegetables, and sweet potatoes. These nutrient-dense options provide sustained energy, optimize performance, and support muscle recovery. I understand that people enjoy working out fasted, but if your goal is to build muscle, you will get more out of your workout if you eat first. If you have more energy, you can workout harder. If you workout harder, you can build more muscle. If you eat, you have more energy! It's not rocket science... but it is exercise science, which can still be tricky.
Don't Forget Healthy Fats:
Healthy fats play a vital role in hormone regulation and overall health. Incorporate sources of unsaturated fats such as avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil into your diet. These fats help maintain optimal testosterone levels, which are essential for muscle growth and strength gains.
Hydrate Effectively:
Proper hydration is often overlooked but is essential for optimal muscle function and recovery. In the Florida climate, it's especially crucial to stay hydrated, particularly during outdoor workouts. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day and consider electrolyte-rich beverages to replenish lost minerals during intense exercise sessions. A good suggestion is to drink half your weight in ounces of water. So, if you weigh 200 pounds, drink 100 ounces in water.
Time Your Meals:
To maximize muscle growth and recovery, pay attention to the timing of your meals and snacks. Consume a balanced meal containing protein and carbohydrates within 30 minutes to an hour post-workout to replenish glycogen stores and kickstart the muscle repair process. Additionally, consider a pre-workout snack or meal to provide energy for optimal performance. Just make sure you're not over eating so you don't get sick! I like to have complex carbs if I have at least an hour before my lift. If it's closer to my lift, I will eat an apple or orange so it's much lighter and digestible
