How to Make Overnight Oats: Delicious, Cheap, Easy

Writer's picture: Connor BlackmonConnor Blackmon

I've worked with hundreds of clients in the Valrico area on losing weight and building muscle, and naturally a large part of their success came from the kitchen. See, most "diets" require you to spend hours in the kitchen preparing delicious, but time consuming meals.

The problem with this approach is that eating healthy will soon feel like a chore, which you can tolerate while you are motivated, but when your life gets stressful, you might opt for the easier, microwavable meals that make gaining weight as easy as this recipe I will show you today,

One of the easiest ways I have learned to save time on breakfast is by having overnight oats with a protein shake. If you've never tried overnight oats before, this recipe will change how you think of breakfast. It takes about 75 seconds to prepare, and I like it much more than cooking oatmeal.

I found it very interesting that there are brands that sell Overnight Oats kits for insane margins! A website I found, OatsOvernight.com, sells 16 meals for $58, plus shipping. That would equal out to $3.62 per meal, which may not sound like much, but let me break this down to you in the ingredient list. I sourced most of these ingredients from Aldi. If you have never shopped at Aldi, you may not believe these prices, but trust me, they are real!

Ingredients

  1. Old Fashioned Rolled Oats - Roughly $4.35 per container, and $0.17 per 45g serving

  2. Jell-O zero sugar pudding mix - ~$1.00, and $0.25 per serving

  3. Fresh Berries - The price can vary depending on the berries you use. I am using blueberries and raspberries, and both containers cost around $5.00, and for the serving size will cost about $1.00, making them the most expensive item per serving on this list.

  4. Unsweetened Almond Milk - About $2.00, which would make it $0.13 per serving.

  5. Greek Yogurt - $3.65, and we will just be using a spoonful, so we will estimate the cost at $0.06.

Side Note: This is not Aldi's brand of Greek yogurt, since I had ran out, I just ran into Target to buy more.

That brings our grand total to a whopping $1.17 per serving, which is less than a third of the cost of the website I mentioned before, not to mention we didn't even factor in shipping. If you've never made overnight oats before, you might think that there are complicated and confusing steps involved. But there just isn't. Trust me, if I can do it, so can you, and maybe you can even beat my record of 59 seconds to put it all together.

Making Overnight Oats

  • The first step is to weigh your oats. I am using a mason jar as the vessel for my soon-to-be meal, but you can use whatever you want: coffee cup, bowl, Tupperware... I've used them all. There is nothing magical about the mason jar, trust me! I opt to weigh my oats instead of using a measuring cup, as I find it to be easier and far more accurate. Measure out 45g.

  • Next, we are going to add in the sugar free Jell-O pudding mix. I am using vanilla, but find whichever flavor suits your palate. This adds in tons of flavor without adding tons of calories.

Use any flavor!
  • Next, add in your almond milk. You should just need to add enough to cover the oats. If you don't add enough, it might be a little dry, since the oats absorb the liquid. If you add too much, it will be like soup. I have found that adding 135g is the perfect amount. Most people don't measure their liquids on a scale... then again, most people also don't try to race the microwave timer while putting away dishes. Give it a good stir!

Great job! Now, just add in your toppings, and put it in the refrigerator over night. I am using blueberries, raspberries, and Greek yogurt, but be creative! I choose the berries because most "berries" are lower in sugar than fruits like bananas, mangos, and oranges.

If you've never tried oats, I'm sure that this may not look like the most appetizing thing ever, but you've got to give it a chance. This is a daily meal for me, and it saves me time and energy every morning. I pair it with a protein shake, since this meal isn't very high in protein.
