I will always give props to those who decide to better their health and go on a journey to lose weight. It is one of the most daunting tasks you will face. We find comfort in food and the sofa, so stepping outside of that established norm takes guts. If that is something you're doing this year, kudos to you! But you MUST watch out for these journey-enders. And if you read this 3 minute post, you'll be miles ahead of everyone else.

The top 3 pitfalls people fall into that ruin their fitness journey

How to turn your weight loss journey into a lifestyle
NEVER exercise to "earn" food.
This is a slippery slope that usually sneaks up after the first few weeks, once the excitement wanes. You start craving comfort foods and think, “I’ll do an extra 10 minutes of cardio, so it’s okay if I indulge.”
This mentality sets you up for a negative relationship with food. If you break your structured routine and justify it with exercise, what happens when you indulge but don’t have the exercise to balance it out? Guilt. And guilt is the last thing you need on this journey.
How to Combat It:
Schedule cheat meals ahead of time.
If you’re just starting, allow yourself 1–2 cheat meals per week. If you’re more experienced, stick to 1–3 cheat meals per month.
Remember: Cheat meals are not rewards. They’re tools for moderation.
Stick to a structured plan. When cheat meals are scheduled, “failure” becomes part of the plan, and that structure builds long-term success.
Do NOT Underestimate Social Pressure
Social settings can be a minefield for your weight loss goals. Maybe it’s a tempting menu item or a well-meaning friend saying, “Relax! One meal won’t hurt.”
It’s not easy to say no in the moment, but you have to remember why you started.
How to Combat It:
Eat Before You Go Out: Having something small like a side salad or protein shake can take the edge off your hunger. If you’re starving while looking at someone’s deep-dish pizza, your goals may feel a lot less important!
Communicate Your Goals: Let friends and family know how much your progress means to you. A good friend will respect your dedication and stop pressuring you. If not, it may be time to evaluate that relationship.
NEVER Overcomplicate the Plan
Starting a weight loss journey can be exciting, and suddenly your social media feed is flooded with elaborate, low-calorie recipes and workout hacks. While they look fun, they can lead to overwhelm and burnout.
Most people fail not because the plan is ineffective but because they make it too hard to stick to.
How to Combat It:
Stick to whole, simple foods and easy-to-prep meals.
Limit time spent in the kitchen. Overly elaborate recipes can lead to decision fatigue and extra cleanup, which increases your chances of skipping the plan altogether.
Keep it simple, stupid.
